This Is What’s About to Matter on Social
Hint: it’s not hashtags.
March is around the corner, and if you want your content (and your calendar) to work harder next month, now’s the time to plan. Consider this your end-of-February reset—what’s shifting, what’s trending, and where you should be showing up.
Inside today’s newsletter:
The latest Meta updates that could impact your strategy
Six visual Reel hooks designed to stop the scroll fast
Two upcoming Rhode Island networking events worth attending
Three Reel trends that feel personal – and actually perform

Latest Updates in Social Media
Grab your iced coffee, because Meta has been busy. Here’s what Rhode Island small businesses actually need to know (and what you can ignore for now).
👻 Instagram Is Testing a Snapchat Rival
Instagram is reportedly working on a new standalone app called “Instants,” focused on disappearing photo sharing between friends. Think: Snapchat energy, but Meta-owned.
Why this matters: Instagram is doubling down on private sharing and DMs, especially with younger users. Translation? The future of engagement isn’t just public posts—it’s private conversations.
For RI businesses:
Start encouraging DMs now. “DM us for the menu,” “Send this to your brunch crew,” “Message us to book.” Private engagement is where the algorithm is putting weight.
🧵 Threads Just Got More Business-Friendly
You can now manage Threads through Meta Business Suite, and there’s a new “Dear Algo” feature rolling out that lets users tweak their feed preferences.
Why it matters: Threads isn’t dead. It’s quietly becoming a strong thought-leadership and community platform.
For RI businesses:
If you’re in service, hospitality, or education, Threads is prime real estate for positioning yourself as the local expert.
👀 Anonymous Story Viewing Is Coming
Meta is testing anonymous Story viewing on Facebook and Instagram.
Yes, lurking just got easier.
Why it matters: Expect Story views to be slightly less reliable as a relationship metric.
For RI businesses:
Focus less on who viewed your Story and more on replies, link clicks, and sticker taps.
🎥 Rights Disputes Just Got Easier on Facebook
Creators can now dispute flagged videos (including music usage) if they have the proper license.
Why it matters: Fewer automatic takedowns if you’re playing by the rules.
🗂 Bulk Delete Your Story Archive
Need to clean house? Instagram now allows bulk deletion of Story archives.
RIP to that 2021 “we tried making reels” era.
🤖 AI… Everywhere
AI face swap tools are in development.
Meta patented AI that could post on your behalf long-term.
Facial recognition may be coming to smart glasses.
Let’s just say… we’re officially in our Black Mirror chapter.
For RI businesses: AI tools can be powerful—but trust and authenticity matter more than ever. Lean into real faces, real spaces, real Rhode Island.
⚖️ Meta Is Facing Teen Safety Scrutiny
Meta is heading to court over teen safety concerns, while leadership maintains Instagram isn’t addictive.
Why this matters: Expect continued updates around safety tools and content moderation.
🧠 The Hey Rhody Takeaway:
The big trend underneath all of this?
Meta is prioritizing:
Private communication (DMs > public likes)
AI-powered features
Creator tools
Algorithm customization
For Rhode Island small businesses, the move is simple:
Build community. Encourage conversation. Show up consistently. Stay human. The platforms will keep shifting – but brands that feel local, clear, and trustworthy will always win.

6 Visual Hooks That Stop the Scroll
If your Reels aren’t getting watched past the first three seconds, it’s not your algorithm luck—it’s your hook.
Right now, strong visual hooks are outperforming long intros and talking-head openings. Why? Because people decide whether to keep watching in seconds. The good news? These don’t require fancy edits, just smarter framing.
Here are six that are working right now (and how Rhode Island small businesses can use them):
1️⃣ Floor POV
Set your phone low on the ground and move through the space.
Try this: A café walking from the door to the espresso machine. A boutique stepping into a new arrival display. A gym capturing the first person walking in for a 6am class.
Why it works: It feels immersive and different. Viewers subconsciously lean in.
2️⃣ Opening the Door
Literally start with a door opening—studio, storefront, treatment room.
Try this: “POV: You booked the appointment.”
It’s simple, cinematic, and instantly creates curiosity.
3️⃣ The Turn
Start facing away, then turn toward the camera on beat.
Try this: Hair reveal. Outfit reveal. “When a client says they want something low maintenance…”
Movement = retention.
4️⃣ The Clap
Clap to transition scenes. Before → after. Empty → busy. Prep → finished.
Quick, clean, satisfying.
5️⃣ Split Screen
Show before/after, expectation vs. reality, or client reaction vs. final result.
Great for service providers and retail.
6️⃣ Sideways Shot
Tilt the camera slightly off-angle for the first second, then straighten it.
It disrupts the scroll just enough to earn attention.
Hey Rhody takeaway:
You don’t need more content—you need better openings. Pick one hook and test it on your next Reel. Keep the first three seconds visually interesting, add on-screen text with a clear keyword (“Providence hair transformation,” “RI brunch spot”), and let the algorithm do the rest.
Attention is currency. Make yours count.

Heating and Cooling Tips to Help Lower Energy Usage
With winter in full swing across Rhode Island, many homeowners are looking for smarter ways to stay comfortable while cutting energy use and managing their utility bills.
One easy first step is requesting a no-cost Home Energy Assessment through Rhode Island Energy. An Energy Specialist will evaluate your home and share personalized recommendations to improve efficiency—often focusing on heating and cooling, which is the largest source of energy use for most households.
Woonsocket homeowner David recently used Rhode Island Energy programs and rebates to support upgrades that included a cold-climate heat pump and improved insulation. The results have been noticeable. “The heat pump is so important to this whole electrification project,” David said. “It’s a lot more comfortable and maintains the temperature in the house a lot better versus our old furnace. The house is constantly at the right temperature.” David estimates the new system is saving him about $40 per month, or $480 per year, compared to his previous heating costs.
During a Home Energy Assessment, customers may also receive no-cost energy-saving products installed during the visit, offering immediate opportunities to reduce usage. Here are three more affordable heating and cooling tips you can put into action right away:
Insulate your water heater. A water heater blanket can help reduce heat loss and cut water heating costs.
Insulate hot water pipes. This simple upgrade reduces heat loss and can help maintain water temperature, improving efficiency.
Improve air sealing and insulation. Sealing leaks and adding insulation can reduce drafts, improve comfort, and lower heating and cooling costs.
By scheduling a no cost Home Energy Assessment and using these simple energy efficiency savings tips, Rhode Islanders can see savings in monthly utility bills. To learn more about improving overall energy efficiency with heating and cooling, visit www.rienergy.com/save.

3 Reel Trends To Try That Feel Personal (and Perform)
If you’re stuck in “what do I even post?” mode, these three Reel trends are low-effort, high-connection—and perfect for Rhode Island small businesses that want to feel human, not salesy.
Trend #1: Childhood Character Reveal
The trend: On-screen text says something like, “You can learn a woman’s character from her childhood photos.” You pose in the same stance as an old childhood photo… then flash to the original.
See an example here:
How to use it: Recreate your childhood photo in your current workspace. Same pose. Same energy. Then cut to the original pic.
Examples for local businesses:
A salon owner recreates a childhood “hair stylist” moment.
A baker posing like their Easy-Bake Oven days.
A photographer holding a toy camera → cut to their real setup.
Why it works: Nostalgia stops the scroll. It builds trust, shows longevity, and reminds people there’s a real human behind the brand.
Trend #2: “Worth It”
The trend: Overlay the text “Worth it.” while showing something that required effort, sacrifice, or risk.
Usually paired with questions like:
“Aren’t you tired of working all the time?”
“Aren’t you embarrassed posting videos?”
“Aren’t you scared of failing?”
See an example here:
How to use it: Show the behind-the-scenes grind – early mornings, restocking, editing, cleaning, prep – and end with the finished result.
Examples for local businesses:
A cafe owner at 5am → packed brunch crowd.
A boutique unpacking inventory → styled window display.
A fitness coach programming workouts → client progress moment.
Why it works: It reframes hustle as purpose. It positions your business as intentional, not accidental – and that builds brand authority.
Trend #3: Compliment Yourself
The trend: Use a playful format to hype up your own product or service. It feels like self-love meets subtle promotion.
See an example here:
How to use it: Film yourself interacting with your product while text overlays or audio “compliment” it. Keep it light and confident.
Examples for local businesses:
“She’s literally perfect.” → showcasing your new pastry.
“You did that.” → revealing a client transformation.
“This is elite behavior.” → plating your signature dish.
Why it works: Confidence converts. This trend lets you promote without sounding like an ad. It feels playful, not pushy.
The Hey Rhody Takeaway:
All three trends have one thing in common: they center story and personality, not just product.
If you’re a Rhode Island small business, that’s your advantage. You’re local. You’re real. You have history.
Pick one trend this week. Keep the hook strong in the first three seconds. Add on-screen text with clear keywords (hello, Social SEO). And let your personality do the selling.
Because the brands that win in 2026? They feel human.
